Poem : Umiam

Image
(A poem on Umiam Lake of Meghalaya ,India) Though today the sky is cloudy, Light and shadow softly play. Umiam ---- around you gathers A fair of trees in green array. A gentle breeze flows calm and sweet, Waves rise with a murmuring sound. My soul finds peace beholding you ---- As though someone lit joy all around. At the call of birds, My heart longs to drift away. My eyes are filled with your beauty --- I wish to return someday. O Umiam , O Umiam I wish to come again someday. -------------- Poet : Dr. Goutam Kumar Mallick

Poem : Mother Durga Is Coming

Image
(Photo credit Ravi Roshan, free download from pexels) My heart whispers -- Mother Durga is coming. So many words rise within me, yet they remain unspoken. The thoughts of heart Stay  locked within. Last time, I had wished to say -- O Mother, grant me the strength to gift my wife a new sari, to clothe my child in fresh attire -- But the words never left my lips. Instead, within my heart I prayed O Slayer of Demons, do not falter in Your battle ! Yet even that remained unsaid. And when You arrived ,Mother, Your Presence filled me with such joy That I forgot everything else. But this time I shall speak, I must speak ---- Mother, make me the demon myself Mother, make me the demon. ------/-------/// Poet : Dr. Goutam Kumar Mallick.

Poem : Ten Fools

Image
(photo Credit by Kaboompics.com,free download from pexels.com) Fool number one Takes a cheat sheet to the test --- Fails the paper like the rest. Fool number two Knows that smoking kills, oh dear, Still  lights a bidi, puffing cheer. Fool number three Cries, " I'm weak,I'm poor,I'm small," Makes a victim of it all. Fool number four Spends his savings , what a case --- On another man's  wife's necklace ! Fool number five Even dying, loudly cries ; " Shankara, you must survive ". Fool number six Truth is simple, clear, and plain --- But his tongue's locked up in chain. Fool number seven Dances to each gossip word, Boasts the loudest ,most absurd. Fool number eight Morning, evening ,sits and chatters, Talking nonsense, nothing matters. Fool number nine Shivers at his  wife's call She's the general, he's small. Fool number ten Throws his money, what a loss ! Then pretends to be the boss. ------------------- Poet : Dr. Goutam K...

Poem : The Arithmetic of Flattery

The boss's walk, his rise and fall, His likes and dislikes ---- Keep your vulture eyes busy with them. When the ripple of his laughter lingers, Ask yourself -- Do your cheeks raise the same wave in time ? Make sure the words  Flowing from your lips Carry a trembling note of servile joy. Match your passive smoking To the boss's active puffs ---- Strive for balance there. Soften your oily body language, Mixing it well with  studied sweetness. And master ---- Don't forget to keep One sharp eye on the scrap heap ! ------------ Poet : Dr. Goutam Kumar Mallick

Poem : Love Above All

God said, I gave you a head --- keep it cool. Inside the head I placed a brain ---- Keep it sharp. I gave you a pair of eyes ----- learn to see far. I gave you a nose, but don't  go poking it Into every matter ! All that the ears hear, don't always send it  via  nerves  to the brain. Some words you hear in the right ear --- let them pass out directly through the left. Don't lean only on your forehead and  leave your hands idle. Remember --- the skin you wear is human skin. I gave you a heart ----- So love.

Poem : Thank You, Mr. Einstein

Mr. Einstein, A million thanks to you. Since my birth, Everything I have seen --- All is relative. On the pages of history, Kings turn into beggars, Beggars rise as kings --- All is relative. Success is relative, Faliure too, Awaiting only The right time and chance. Poem : The Level Crossing Ahead

Ahead of you lies a level crossing, A train may come your way, Why stay blind though eyes are open -- Use you brain today. At home a little child awaits, Who will care if you are gone ? Your house of joy, your home of peace Will drown if you're withdrawn. Your sky of dreams is filled with hope, Your child will grow one day ----- Would you depart in middle now And leave him cast away ? The road too has its rules of walk, Learn them ,hold them near, If you wish to avoid mishaps, Follow  them with care. ------------------ Poet : Dr.Goutam Kumar Mallick

Poem :Love and Marriage

Is it written anywhere That love must end in marriage? Some love lifelong Without ever marring ! And some marry, yet keep distributing to love everywhere. For some, only through marriage The flower of love blooms, For others, There is marriage but no love. Then, to them, the word love Feels strangely meaningless. -------------------- Poet : Dr.Goutam kumar Mallick

Poem : In Search of Your Smiling Face

( In memory of Astronaut Kalpana Chawla) One day you looked up at the sky from the earth, One day your dreams touched the stars in the sky. Was it that you loved the sky so deeply That you choose to remain there forever? Today, just once, look down from the sky to the earth ----- All the flowers have slipped from our hands. With tear - filled eyes, everyone gazes upward, Among the stars of the sky Searching for your smiling face. --/--/-/--- Poet : Dr.Goutam kumar Mallick

poem : Silent Exchange

If I lose my work, no one else is ruined. Ruined are only my wife, My aged mother , my old father, and my infant child. And yet , I rush to rallies, even at the cost of my own work, so that some 'special ' one may not face destruction. But I do not think , not even once ---- if I do not go, then he himself will come rushing To save my work.

Poem : O First Scientist

On the path you showed, we boarded buses, trains And airplanes, And reached the land of the atom bomb. Today we can reach the moon, none will be amazed if we set foot on mars. We can give life, yet remain busy in the game of taking lives. The mask of civilization falls away in a sudden gust of wind. O first scientist, was it not you who sowed the seed of civilization ? Come again plant a tender sapling anew --- not outside, but deep within our veins, let civilization bloom in blood. ----------------------- Poet : Dr.Goutam Kumar Mallick
